Dorado Photoshoot Guide: Beaches, Best Light & Planning Tips

Where to shoot in Dorado, Puerto Rico, the best time for soft light and how to plan a beach or resort photoshoot 30 minutes from San Juan.

Dorado is where San Juan slows down. About 30 minutes west of the city, it has calmer beaches, rocky coastline and a polished resort feel that photographs beautifully. If you are staying in Dorado, or want a beach session that feels less crowded than the city, this is how I plan it.

    Why Dorado works for photos

The coastline mixes soft sand, dark volcanic rock and clear water, so in one short walk we get very different backgrounds. Beaches are usually quieter than Condado or Isla Verde, which means fewer people in the frame and a more relaxed session, especially for boudoir-style swimwear or couples.

    Spots I like in Dorado

    • Ojo del Buey: rock formations and waves for dramatic, editorial frames.
    • Playa Sardinera: calm water and open sand, easy for families and couples.
    • Resort grounds: palm-lined paths and pools for a luxury look. Most resorts ask for permission or a guest booking, so we confirm before the session.
    • Town center: small streets and plazas for a few lifestyle frames before or after the beach.

    Best time of day

Late afternoon is my favorite in Dorado: the light turns golden over the water and the wind usually drops. Early morning also works and gives you an almost empty beach. Avoid 11 AM to 3 PM; the sun is straight overhead and the sand reflects hard light. For seasonal detail, see the best time for a photoshoot in Puerto Rico.

    What to wear

    • Light fabrics that move with the breeze: linen, chiffon, satin.
    • Whites, creams, sand tones or one bold color against the blue water.
    • Flat sandals for walking on rock; we switch to barefoot for the shots.
    • A second look for the resort or town frames.

    Planning tips

    • Travel: plan about 30 to 40 minutes from San Juan, more at rush hour.
    • Combine locations: a Dorado beach session pairs well with an evening in Old San Juan on another day.
    • Rocks: the volcanic rock is sharp and slippery when wet; I always pick safe spots for each pose.
    • Weather: short tropical showers pass quickly. We keep a plan B under the palms.
Calm water, golden light and space to breathe. Book your Dorado session at kevinmumaw.com/booking.
