Old San Juan is hands-down the most photogenic corner of Puerto Rico. Pastel facades, blue cobblestones, 500-year-old forts and the Caribbean as your backdrop - every street is a set. Here is how to plan a shoot that actually feels like the postcard.

Best locations inside the walls

• Calle del Cristo - pastel facades and the iconic blue stones, best early before crowds.
• Capilla del Cristo - wrought-iron gate, soft side light all morning.
• Castillo San Felipe del Morro - wide-open lawns and ocean views, golden hour magic.
• Paseo de la Princesa - palms, the Raíces fountain and the old city wall.
• Plaza Colón and Calle Fortaleza - colored umbrellas and painted doors.

Best time of day

Sunrise to 8:30 AM is unbeatable: warm light, almost no tourists and easy parking. Golden hour at El Morro (the last 90 minutes before sunset) is the second sweet spot - softer shadows, dramatic skies.

Outfit ideas that pop against the city

• White and ivory - looks luminous against the colored walls.
• Deep red, mustard or cobalt - pulls the city palette together.
• Flowy dresses for movement in the breeze coming off the bay.

Permits, parking and logistics

Personal sessions inside Old San Juan do not require a permit. Commercial shoots at El Morro or San Cristóbal need a National Park Service permit - I handle it. Park at Doña Fela or Covadonga and walk in; Sundays are best for traffic.

Get there before the sun is up. The city is yours for one hour, and that hour is the whole shoot.
