How to Choose a Photographer in Puerto Rico

What to ask, what a fair price looks like, and the red flags I would avoid before booking a photographer on the island.

How to Choose a Photographer in Puerto Rico - photo session in San Juan, Puerto Rico documented by Kevin Mumaw (KMPhoto)

Searching for a photographer in Puerto Rico can feel like scrolling through a hundred similar feeds. Everyone shoots at the same beaches, everyone posts the same golden hour. Here is how I would filter, as someone who shoots on this island every week.

    1. Look at full galleries, not just the highlight reel

Anyone can post ten strong frames. Ask to see one complete session from start to finish. You want consistency: the same skin tones, the same editing style, the same quality in the middle of the gallery as at the beginning.

    2. Ask who directs the session

Most people are not models and do not know what to do with their hands. If the photographer does not pose and direct, you get stiff photos. Ask directly: do you guide me through poses, or do I need to bring my own ideas?

    3. Confirm the location plan and the light

In Puerto Rico the difference between a good and a great session is often the hour. Condado and El Escambrón shine at sunrise, Rincón and Playa Sucia at sunset, Old San Juan before 9 in the morning. A local photographer should tell you the time before you ask.

What a fair price looks like

    • Mini session, around 30 minutes and 10 to 15 edited images: 200 to 300 dollars
    • Standard session, about an hour with two looks: 300 to 450 dollars
    • Extended or brand session, two hours or more, multiple locations: 500 dollars and up
    • Travel outside the metro area, such as Culebra, Rincón or Cabo Rojo, usually adds a fee

Very low prices usually mean rushed editing or a long wait. Very high prices should come with a clear reason: a team, a studio, wardrobe or licensing for commercial use.

    Red flags

    • No contract and no clear deposit policy
    • No delivery date in writing
    • A portfolio built from different photographers or from AI images
    • Slow or vague answers before you pay, which usually gets worse after
    • No reviews anywhere outside of their own feed

Questions worth sending in your first message

    • How many edited photos do I receive and when?
    • Do you help with wardrobe and location choice?
    • What happens if it rains?
    • Can I use the photos commercially?
    • Do you have a permit if we shoot in a restricted spot?

    How I work

I shoot across San Juan, Condado, Isla Verde, Old San Juan and the west coast. I direct the whole session, I pick the hour based on the light, and edited galleries go out in about two weeks. If you want to talk through your idea first, message me on WhatsApp and I will tell you honestly if I am the right fit.

The best photographer for you is the one whose full galleries look like the photos you want of yourself.
